The Sculptor in his Studio

Sculptor Avard Fairbanks, PhD, whose pioneer ancestor (grandfather) passed along this trail in 1847 on the way to the Salt Lake Valley, was born in Provo, Utah in 1897. In his distinguished career as sculptor, anatomist and educator he created more than 100 public monuments honoring great characters and events in history. He studied in Paris and Italy, served on the faculties of five universities and was the founding dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah.

The Pony Express Monument captures in bronze the exciting moment of the exchange of the horses. The rider has dismounted his fatigued horse, has tossed the mail pouch onto the fresh horse, and now charges off, not yet fully into the saddle.
